On Friday, June 27, the funeral service for Marine Sergeant Matthew Elias Mendoza will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 618 S. Grimes. Mendoza, who graduated from Highlands High School, died June 20 in Afghanistan.

The City of San Antonio honors the sacrifices of local fallen heroes by lowering the flags at municipal buildings to half-staff on the day of the funeral services.

This community has deep military roots and strong patriotism. In honor of Sergeant Mendoza and his family, I am inviting all local businesses and property managers to join us and lower flags flown at their facilities to half-staff this Friday.
