WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

MAKING THE BUSINESS CASE FOR GOING GREEN IN EXISTING BUILDINGS

The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International consistently delivers the industry's most highly- respected and comprehensive education and this year is no exception as the 2008 BOMA International Conference and The Office Building Show comes to the Colorado Convention Center on June 22-24. The conference will focus on the business case for "greening" existing buildings by teaching specific strategies and technologies to reduce energy consumption and implement green management practices that realize a positive return on investment. Designed by leading experts for professionals at all levels of experience, the education program will feature more than 40 sessions organized around 5 driver issues: Achieving Sustainability, Enhancing Asset Value, Building a High Performance Team, Optimizing Technology and Exploring New Business Opportunities.

ACHIEVING SUSTAINABILITY

The Achieving Sustainability track has something for everyone. Attend a session on implementing green operations in large portfolios and receive analysis on investment grade decisions that provide operational savings and value back to real estate owners. Various case studies will also be provided on everything from strategies for implementing no- and low-cost operational practices to the process of retrofitting an existing building to green standards to sustainability in a mixed use environment.

ENHANCING ASSET VALUE

While achieving sustainability is certainly a hot topic in all industries, there are other sizeable concerns facing the commercial real estate industry. As the markets have turned downward and assets are not gaining in value purely by appreciation any longer, Enhancing Asset Value has become a primary concern of owners and managers. In today's market it is imperative to understand what drives value in the asset. Sessions in this track will highlight strategies for adding value to the asset, as well as for improving net operating income through a variety of methods-not just reducing operating expenses. University of Denver Burns School of Real Estate & Construction Management's Dr. Glenn Mueller is one of the featured presenters who will look take an in-depth look within the capital markets and highlight the opportunities and challenges the commercial office sector may face given the current cycle. Creating value in an asset doesn't happen without exceptional talent at all levels of an organization. Another track of programs, Building a High Performance Team, will feature programs designed to help real estate managers identify and recruit new talent, mentor and retain their rising stars, navigate career transformations and create effective staff platforms to manage the business. In this track, Professor Frank Cespedes, Harvard Business School, will deliver a crucial session on attracting and retaining talent, a problem across the board in today's market. He will provide strategies, tools and tips for identifying top talent and share key strategies for cultivating their skill sets and keeping them engaged.

OPTOMIZING TECHNOLOGY

In addition to great talent, most great organizations also need great systems. The Optimizing Technology track features programs to help identify and evaluate technologies that can improve operations, enhance asset value and create efficiencies. Sessions in this track will focus on integrated building systems, including project timing, project expectations, how to modify the traditional roles of the project team and the technical foundations of integrating building technology systems. The session will also spotlight strategies for leveraging technologies to achieve both operational efficiencies and expense savings.

EXPLORING NEW BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

Expl oring New Business Opportunities will focus on new opportunities for real estate companies-both in the U.S. and abroad. Mixed-use projects continue to proliferate and represent opportunities for commercial real estate managers and owners alike, but taking advantage of those opportunities requires understanding the nuances of those projects. Farther afield, across the globe, international markets beckon. With global capital readily available, real estate is booming in Asia and South America. But what does it take to create an international platform? Find out at the BOMA International Conference.

HOW IT BREAKS OUT

Education sessions range in length from three hour workshops, to 75- minute breakout sessions, to 30-minute Power Sessions, affording every attendee not only a topic but a timeframe best suited to their needs. Many education programs qualify for continuing education credits for renewal of state real estate licenses. Look for a full list of approved programs at http://www.bo maconvention.org/.
