3. BOMA International Action Alert
Oppose Tax Hike

Legislation will be on the floor of the House of Representatives next week that would change the tax treatment of the carried interest in a partnership from a capital gain (currently taxed at a 15% rate) to that of ordinary income (for most, a 35% tax rate). Carried interest is the additional percentage of the profits offered to the general partner as incentive to make the investment prosperous without contributing any capital of their own. It is paid only when, and if, the real estate investment actually is successful.

If put in place, this tax increase would severely impact the commercial real estate industry by hindering investment and risk taking by commercial real estate entrepreneurs. BOMA needs your help to tell Congress the story of the unintended consequences of this tax hike. Please ask your representative and senators to oppose H.R. 3996.

Visit the BOMA International Legislative Action Center and write to Congress today!

4. 2008 EER Survey
Going Green

There are some important new changes on the way for the upcoming EER Survey cycle beginning shortly.

  • Because the majority of the surveys (85%) are submitted electronically, BOMA will NOT print and mail copies of the survey, but will mail postcards and email reminders with the link to the Online Survey starting in December.
  • The actual 2008 EER Online Survey will be available via a link on the BOMA website in January.
  • A PDF version of the survey will be posted on BOMA's website, however all respondents will be highly encouraged to submit data online.
  • Local associations will be in the running to win cash prizes based upon the online survey participation level of members.
More information will be forth coming in the next few weeks.
