Preventive Maintenance Checks for Emergency Response Equipment

Over the past several years, there has been a tremendous increase in the request for security officers to be trained in first aid, CPR and the use of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs). Early response by trained personnel and easy access to emergency equipment (first aid kits, AED units, and CPR protective shields) greatly increase the survival rate of sudden cardiac arrest and other life threatening injuries. Security officers may also work in environments where they may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens (germs, and viruses which are transmitted by blood or other bodily fluids).

For the officers' protection, personal protective equipment may be provided based on anticipated exposure and the type of training and equipment available. Examples are gloves, masks and protective breath shields for CPR.

When maintaining your site emergency equipment, first aid supplies and protective barriers, the following should be considered:

  • Batteries for AED Unit - Check with the manufacturer's expiration date, usually five years. Don't wait for the batteries to fail before ordering a replacement!

  • Electrodes for the AED Unit - Check for the adhesiveness of each pad. Repeated use may cause the pad to loose the stickiness. Check for manufacturer's expiration date, usually two years.

  • Protective Breathing Shields and Latex Gloves - Check for dry or cracked condition. Check for manufacturer's expiration date.
Preventive maintenance of your emergency equipment will assure that it functions properly if and when it is needed.
