In 1999, the Board of Directors of San Antonio BOMA created a program to provide scholarships to students for professional education, either for participation in designation programs offered by the BOMI Institute, or to attend educational programs offered by BOMA (Southwest Conference, Convention, Boot Camp, Top Gun, Medical Office Building Seminars, Executive Education, etc.). The maximum amount of assistance provided for BOMA educational programs is 100% of the registration fee, plus (a) $250 for other expenses associated with a program in Texas or (b) $750 for other expenses associated with a program outside of Texas.

Criteria of Scholarship Eligibility

  1. Applicant must have been a Regular Member representative in San Antonio BOMA for at least two years and must actively serve on a local committee for at least one year prior to receipt of scholarship.
  2. Applicant must submit a letter of recommendation from their supervisor and have long-term career plans in the commercial real estate industry, with at least two years of experience in the field.
  3. Applicant must submit a minimum 250 word essay explaining his/her career plan and how the requested course will further it.
  4. For BOMI Institute courses:
    • If not previously enrolled in the program, the recipient is responsible for payment of the one-time enrollment fee (currently $175 for all courses of study). This expenditure is not necessary to apply for a scholarship, but, if approved, must be paid at the time of course registration.
    • Applicant must complete and pass one course before being eligible for scholarship.
    • Scholarship funds are available only for courses with a tuition fee of $400 and higher.
    • A maximum of five courses per student may be funded.
    • Funding will be awarded as follows:
1st Scholarship                    100% of course fee
2nd Scholarship                    80% of course fee
3rd Scholarship                     60% of course fee
4th Scholarship                     40% of course fee
5th Scholarship                     20% of course fee
  5. Each scholarship award covers one course or meeting. With each additional course taken, reapplication is necessary. Recipients must complete and pass each course to be eligible for subsequent scholarships.
  6. Application for scholarship must be presented to the Education Committee at least three weeks prior to the course start date and/or registration deadline for out-of-town seminars. Failure to meet deadline will eliminate consideration of application unless the SABOMA Board of Directors waives the deadline.
  7. The maximum amount of assistance provided for BOMA International programs is 100% of the registration fee, plus (a) $250 for other expenses associated with a program in Texas or (b) $750 for other expenses associated with a program out of state.
  8. If scholarship is for an out of town meeting, recipient must submit an article for the newsletter summarizing the classes/meetings attended and giving an overview of the content.
  9. Applicants are eligible for coverage on one out-of-town meeting every two years. In a single calendar year, applicants are eligible for coverage on a maximum of two BOMI courses or one out-of-town meeting.
  10. All scholarship recipients are required to participate in BOMA International’s Experience Exchange Report (EER).
  11. Scholarship funding provided by SABOMA as follows:
    • Maximum of $6,000.00 per year will be awarded for courses
    • Maximum of $,2000.00 will be awarded per course
    • Any unused amount will remain in the scholarship fund for future use.
    • Maximum of $3,000.00 per year will be awarded for conferences/conventions; $1,000.00 for the Southwest Regional Conference and $2,000.00 for the International Conference. Any unused portion from the SW Conference can be rolled over for the International Conference, with the annual distribution not to exceed $3,000.00.
    • Any unused portion allotted to one course can be rolled over into the next course’s funding, with the annual distribution not to exceed $6,000.00
We hope that members will plan for courses they would like to take and apply for the scholarship if their employer will not or can not fund the expense. The application for property management course funding can be requested from the SABOMA office at any time. Remember, among the few things more expensive than an education these days is the lack of it.
